The supplement dose that NICE are discussing is to set elevate the level above the point where rickets develop (supplementing with 400iu per day). However, this is still far from the established healthy level that studies have shown should be closer to 10,000iu per day. Doses this high should only be taken alongside Vitamin K2 or your body may struggle to process calcium properly. Interestingly there is a significant shift in thinking on osteoporosis (brittle bones) away from supplementing with calcium (because most of us have plenty available in our system) and towards a lack of D3 & K2 – to essential compounds that allow us to process our calcium into bone tissue.
