‘Text Neck’ And Bad Posture In Teens

16/1/2020

iPhones, iPads, iPods, Xbox, Playstation, you name it, our generation of kids have it!  And now Text neck!
Picture
Who would have thought that the use of smartphone & tablet devices could create such frequent occurring neck pain, that it has its own definable term?

Posture, especially good upright posture, is declining fast. With usage on these devices nearing 4hrs+ per day, the strain on the ligaments, muscles and joints in the neck is too great. The effect? ‘text neck’.

Text Neck is described by Health professionals such as chiropractors, when a person is bowing the head at an angle for extended periods while using a smartphone risking serious repetitive stress injuries.

A neck should have a healthy neck curve. Text neck can lead to neck pain, headaches, eye pain, shoulder pain, nausea and migraines.

If you are concerned about your child's posture book them in for a complimentary Posture Screen Today!

What's The Key To Great Health?

9/1/2020

Most people think seeing the doctor is only important when they’re sick and scheduling a visit when you’re feeling fine is relatively new. When it comes to health and wellness, an increasing number of people want to achieve their best and are doing so by visiting the chiropractor…not just for back pain, but to stay well Here’s what you need to know.
Picture
The First Sign
Remember when you were little and being sick meant you stayed home from school when you didn’t feel well and went back when you were better? We have been taught to believe that being sick means there are obvious systems, but we know that isn’t always the case. Many health issues are the direct result of unhealthy habits and they don’t always have the clear symptoms that one would expect until the illnesses are advanced.

A Healthy Response
Sometimes symptoms don’t present themselves. Other times, your body can show symptoms of illness but actually be functioning optimally. For example, if you eat food that hasn’t been handled properly and find yourself ill, you might not feel good but your body is having a healthy response by expelling the toxins. True health isn’t just about how you feel, but about how well the body functions.

Central Control
How well the body works is based on the wellness of the nervous system, and that is a key reason why so many people visit our chiropractic practice for wellness care. Our patients want every organ and tissue in their body to have an uninterrupted nerve supply, accomplished through chiropractic adjustments. When the body is functioning as it should, you can better detect small problems before they become serious health issues.

Achieve True Health
True health is more than not being sick. It is the combination of physical, mental, and social well-being. A diet rich in nutritious foods, regular exercise, enjoying time with friends and family — all of these are healthy habits that yield even bigger results when your nervous system is functioning optimally.

We know that everyone wants to feel good, but your healthcare should not be limited to whether or not you are experiencing pain or other negative symptoms. Health problems can exist without obvious symptoms, like heart disease and high blood pressure.

Adjusting To A New Year

Every year, we all find ourselves caught in the fray of adjusting to a new year. Whether it’s getting used to writing a new year at the end of the date or taking action on a new year’s resolution, starting a new year can feel like a fresh start. Although most changes made are dependent on one’s ability to commit, other changes will require the assistance of a professional. Since you’re starting a new year, why not make sure that your spine and joints are free of subluxations? Starting a new year with a chiropractic adjustment can help you realign your body by putting your health first.

In this new year, plan to live the life you’ve always dreamed of, and if that cannot happen this year, then get the ball rolling so that every year from now, you will get a little closer to your goal.
In the end, all we have is one life, so make the most of it :)

Have a Happy, Healthy Christmas

19/12/2019

Christmas is nearly here and many of us are looking forward to celebrations, spending time with friends and relatives - and some time off work. But it can easily become a time of excess, so here are some simple tips on how to make this a Happy and Healthy Christmas from the team at Lifetime Wellness Chiropractic.
Picture

Picture
  •  Eat well
By that we mean make healthy choices rather than overindulge. Nutritionists recommend starting the day with a healthy breakfast such as porridge - the oats help to balance blood sugar levels and control your appetite later in the day. Try and fill up on healthy foods - lean meat, fish and vegetables. It's easier to say no to high calorie fatty foods if you are not hungry. And let's hear it for the miuch maligned brussels sprout. They are a great source of vitamins B and C, which are thought to help to protect against heart disease and cancer.

  • Stay hydrated
Your body depends on water to survive - every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to work correctly so try and drink 6 – 8 glasses a day. Herbal teas, juices and even coffee count towards hydration but remember coffee is  a diuretic so too much can be counter-active.

  • Keep moving!
Go for a lovely winter walk, do some daily stretching exercises, visit the gym between Christmas and the New Year or do some yoga. One way or another try to make exercise an integral part of your holiday break - you will feel so much better for it!

  • Avoid the chemical stressors
Anything that goes into the body either nourishes us or doesn't - so avoid the stuff that doesn't! We are not saying you have to be a saint; just limit your intake of alcohol, sugar and salt  - all known chemical stressors - and it will help you avoid negative after effects such as hangovers, mood swings and excessive weight gain. A clever plan at a drinks party can be to alternate an alcoholic drink with a soft drink such as juice or water. Try and opt for fruit and nuts instead of chocolate and salty snacks.

  • Rest and relaxation
It's what the (Chiropractic) Doctor ordered. Rest and relaxation protects your heart, boosts your immune system, improves memory function, lowers risk of stroke, helps fend off depression, improves decision making, keeps you slim, improves your skin, improves your love life and more! What more can we say to persuade you to take it easy? So instead of rushing around, try to make time to 'down tools' and simply be.

  • Look after your spine
Good spinal health is key to feeling and being your best at all times. Because the nervous system controls every cell and organ in your body, we tend to focus our attention on the health of your spine ensuring that it is properly aligned.Your body has the amazing, innate ability to heal itself and it is our job to help create an environment to facilitate this.

Lifetime Wellness Chiropractic will be open over the Christmas period, so if you do need to pop in for a treatment just give us a call to arrange an appointment to suit you. We look forward to seeing you soon, in the meantime, we wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year from the team at Lifetime Wellness Chiropractic.

Add Movement To Your Lifestyle

28/11/2019

Movement is linked to every function and process in the body. Lifestyle is by far the most important factor that determines the type and frequency of movement that a person engages in. Today with all the modern technology available to us many of us lead a sedentary lifestyle without even having to ‘move off our chair”. Desk work is far more common than it used to be and activities that used to require movement now require much less of it (washing dishes, laundry etc)

Winter Fitness versus Winter Hibernation

14/11/2019

Winter fitness is critical in cold climates. Your heart, lungs and muscles know no season. We all need regular exercise and activity to stay healthy regardless of how cold it is outside.

If you hibernate during the winter, it will have fitness consequences. Not paying attention to winter fitness in your 20’s will be different than in your 60’s. The consequences for cumulative poor health choices snowball as we get older. As with any health habit, consistency is the key to fitness.
Picture
In your 20’s and early 30’s, you have an opportunity for building speed and power that will be unlike any time in your life. As we watch the Olympics, we realise the competitors are all young. Not young as in “50 is the new 30” young. As in actual young—25.

When a 30 year old chooses not to participate in winter fitness, they are going to lose their athletic performance but odds are, in a month they will gain it back quickly. Between 20-35 is really the time to pay attention to intervals. Core training to keep your body from becoming injured is also critical. Now is also the time to take care of little injuries and get yourself back in the game. How many of us know 55 year olds who are still blaming that bum knee they injured in high school for their 50 lb weigh gain?

As we reach middle age, between 35-50 you have the opportunity to build your endurance if you pay attention to winter fitness. Consistency becomes much more important as you lose your fitness a lot quicker than when you were young. Those years are the most easy to fall off the bus with raising kids and traveling for work. When you are short on time, make sure to still get it done. If you need to start bike commuting to work to make sure you get exercise, do it. If you have an opportunity to do a workout class at lunch through your company, take advantage of it. Injuries will inevitably limit when you can do. My choice at 35 was continuing to play tennis and be sore all the time or find something without so much stop and start. If this age group takes the winter off, they will lose their entire base or habit.

If you can’t do your full workout, at least do a partial workout each day to keep it top of mind. Instead of watching your kids sports practices, do your own workout.
As you hit the 50-65 year demographic, hopefully you start to find more time for yourself. Now is the time to set your body up for a happy retirement. If you’ve let others rule your calendar, now is the time to recommit. Some of the fittest people I know are in their 50’s and 60’s. Fitness has been a life long habit and priority for them. If it hasn’t been for you, it is never to late to start. With some quality instruction and consistent chiropractic care for the injuries that inevitably pop up, you can become fitter.

How you manage your excuses now will determine how you spend your retirement. Will you still be hiking and biking? Or will you be making excuses for your injury from 30 years ago? As a reminder, manage your joint health NOW. At Lifetime Wellness Chiropractic, we can help you.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help With Concussions

24/10/2019

It’s vital to seek treatment for a concussion as soon as possible. While initial diagnostic testing is often conducted by a physician or sports medicine specialist, typically in a hospital setting, those battling ongoing symptoms may benefit from chiropractic care.
Picture
French lock Sebastien Vahaamahina was sent off in Wales’s quarterfinal win after elbowing Welshman Aaron Wainwright at a maul.
What is a Concussion?
When you suffer a sudden bump or blow to the head, you may receive a concussion, a type of TBI caused by rapid movement forcing the brain to move back and forth rapidly inside your skull. That unnaturally abrupt motion can damage the brain, leading to changes on a chemical and/or cellular level.
Symptoms of a Concussion
Concussions range from mild to severe, with symptoms following a similar arc. Signs of a concussion include:
  • Headache
  • Head pressure
  • Blurry vision
  • Confusion or mental fogginess
  • Dizziness
  • Memory loss, particularly surrounding the event that caused the injury
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Trouble forming verbal responses
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Uncontrollable fatigue
  • Sleep issues
  • Problems with taste and smell
  • Lack of concentration
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings and personality changes
  • Depression
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
While some of the physical manifestations of a concussion will show up right away, cognitive symptoms may not appear for hours, days or even weeks. Sometimes symptoms persist indefinitely, in which case a patient may be diagnosed with a disorder called post-concussion syndrome. With PCS, symptoms often fade and reappear in response to physical or mental stress. The syndrome can be quite debilitating and disrupt the patient’s life considerably.

To help facilitate a fast, complete recovery, it’s crucial to seek medical treatment any time you have a head injury, but especially if you experience any of the symptoms listed above. Red flag symptoms, such as loss of consciousness, uneven pupils, difficulty walking, repeated vomiting, and excruciating headache or seizures, requires an immediate call to 999 or trip to the emergency room.
Chiropractic Care for Concussions
Conventional medicine focuses on two issues surrounding concussions: prevention and medicated management of symptoms. Both concerns are valid, especially the idea of prevention; wearing a helmet and other protective gear while playing sports helps prevent a TBI in the first place. It also helps ward off repeated brain injuries, the consequences of which can be increasingly catastrophic.

With chiropractic care, however, we take treatment one step further by addressing all the peripheral concerns caused by your concussion. Rather than throwing anti-inflammatories at your muscle pain or prescribing painkillers to quell migraines, we try to get to the root cause, which is often a dysfunction in the musculoskeletal or nervous systems.
Understanding Brain Health and Alignment
Your spine is amazing. There are 33 vertebrae working hard to keep you upright and moving, including the ones at the very top holding your head in place. The force behind a traumatic brain injury or whiplash can knock those vertebrae out of place — even a misalignment as small as one-fourth of a millimetre could interrupt cellular communication and lead to a surprisingly robust list of symptoms.
Seeing a Chiropractor for Concussions
Though your first stop for a suspected concussion can and should be an MD or other emergency room personnel, a doctor of chiropractic can help with everything from evaluation to management, especially in the long-term. Chiropractors are well-suited to concussion treatment, and have the knowledge and expertise to lend a helping hand.
Helping Yourself Heal from a Concussion
Whether you receive ongoing chiropractic care for your concussion or not, there are three things that can help facilitate progress:
  • Rest: Pushing yourself will only cause further stress and anxiety, neither of which is good for a brain trying its best to heal.
  • Time: Once the immediate medical needs have been addressed, many concussion symptoms only resolve with time. Chiropractic helps the body function at its best, but nothing can outright cure a concussion.
  • Patience: Rest and time can’t be rushed. Give your body a break and some extra love, and it’ll love you back.
In the meantime, protect your brain by adhering to concussion protocols (this means taking time off from sports, if applicable), creating a safe home environment, and wearing safety equipment, such as seat belts and headgear depending on the situation.
If you’re battling ongoing symptoms of a concussion and need help navigating your new normal, reach out to our team at Lifetime Wellness Chiropractic and get on the road to a happier, healthier you.
